My graduation, what does it mean?
What does it mean to graduate? It is of course the accomplishment of goal. but what does it really mean?
Alfredo Cristiani, former president of El Salvador and one of the main responsible for the Peace Agreement in my country, was the guest of Honor in my Graduation Ceremony. He properly spoke about peace and its relation with my University, Escuela Superior de Economía y Negocios, which was founded exactly 1 year after the peace agreement. In his speech, he said that sometimes, many people misunderstood the agreement, because they say: we do not live in peace with all the murders and crime that happens in our country, but what the guerrillas and the government signed 15 years ago was a mutual agreement that they will no longer be fighting, the FMLN was going to be a Political Party, the Army would change its role in society, etc, etc, etc. And about the murders and the crime, that is something that is everyone’s responsibility he said. Now
what does it means to you, recent graduates? He said that after he graduated, he thought making a living was earning a lot of money and that was it, but later on, he found out that making living is more about finding yourself a good wife/husband and do good thing for the people around you. So Kids, tonight you graduate and you have to celebrate it, but tomorrow, start making your living.
I am sure that those words mean a lot to me.
